My work has been a journey of shape exploration, through patterns and geometric interlocking shapes.  Exploring patterns, certain aspects of patterns and shapes through cartography and maps, working those into my work, and integrating in cityscapes as well as painting maps and patterns on human bodies. From there I started designing patterns and geometric forms as part of the landscape as part of the human face and figure. This progression led me into a more playful nature of my work, thinking about ambiguity, conceptual construction and rhetoric, in the persuasive nature that makes it believable. The ambiguous space and open ends areas lend to the overall composition and create a balance between what is stated and not stated.  There is sometimes more meaning in silence and emptiness then there is in detail and busyness. It’s not always important to capture or depict everything around the subject matter, but to integrate emotion and intimacy. Leaving portions blank gives the viewer an opportunity to interact with the piece, by filling in the blank with their own imaginings, continuing with the genre and the context I have provided, or fill in with their own personal story.  I want to delve further into how a one or two dimensional drawing takes on a three or more dimensional quality, through the use of overlay, geometric shapes, empty space, or simplistic design that alters the perception of the work. The exploration then becomes not just the portrait or the subject itself, but the space and emptiness around it, that defines it quality.

Triptych Series

Inspired by cartography, daily travel routes, and iconic architecture, this study of mixed media involves free-hand drawing, grid-style projection, blueprints, overlays of old Boston Maps, MBTA ‘T’ Travel Routes, and a little bit of creative license and imagination. It follows the journey of my daily routine from start to finish. From the start of my day, walking downtown doing research and field studies, then on to traveling to class, to finally returning back to where I started but a different perspective. Each art piece in this study set is 22″ X 30″ using multi-media.

Triptych Series

When you take a hammer to glass bottle, you’re left with the shards of something that was whole, but now the shards set a new tone and scene. I was heavily studying patterns and repetition at the time as well, so combining the two studies only seemed natural. By overlaying patterns and figuring out new ways the pieces can fit together, you can create a whole new perspective in which the narrative begins to shape itself. Each art piece is 18″ X 24″ using Graphite on Heavy Cold-Pressed Handmade Paper.
